San Sebastian Church
The Minor Basilica of San Sebastian is the first and only all-steel church in Gothic style in Asia and second in the world. Notably, the altar and some of the pews are made of silver. It is one of the four minor basilicas in the Archdiocese of Manila. It is said that the architect decided to use steel to build the present structure because the church is situated in an earthquake fault. In fact, it had been completely destroyed by an earthquake twice.
The design for the church was done in 1883. The church was prefabricated in Belgium. It was shipped backed to the Philippines in six ships. It is said to weigh close to 50,000 tons. The church’s stained-glass windows were done in France.

Hi. I have particular interest and pride in this magnificent Church because I graduated from this school way back 1990. May I just add that according to the UNESCO website, the stained glass was made in Germany, not France, as Admin claimed. Also both this website and the UNESCO failed to state that the Church was designed by no less than Gustav Eiffel, after whom a famous tower was named along the Seine River across Avenue de New York in Paris, France. Long live San Sebastian Basilica!

Hi Atty Gerry. How are you? We are a conservation advocacy group called Bakas Pilipinas who facilitated the nomination of San Sebastian Basilica in the 2010 Watch List of World Monuments Fund. We are looking to connect with San Sebastian College alumni groups for networking and possible collaboration on conservation/preservation/restoration/repair projects on the basilica. Among our aims is to drum up interest and support from the SSC network of graduates and alumni. There are a number of pressing issues that need to be addressed soon regarding the state of the church building. If you and your SSC network would be interested to know more about these much needed conservation/preservation efforts, please get in touch with us through bakaspilipinas@gmail.com.

We would like to invite them to Bakas Pilipinas’ Celebration and Fund-Raising Event on May 13, 2010 at the Philippine Consulate, 556 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY. Please see post below. Can you send us contact information for alumni so we can send them invitations?
Thanks

The Eiffel thing is still a rumor and has not been proven. If I remember right, the NHI says otherwise.

The San Sebastian church of Manila is a Basilica and a shrine and landmarks. It is a marvel in structural engineering just like the Cordillera rice terraces. I suggest that this structure be declared by the UNESCO as a world heritage site in the Philippines.

This is really fantastic !
we can say that it is a pride of Filipino for having a church like this. ornament developed splendid decorations which we can see in exterior and interior part of the church. The most important thing is that the medium used was steel.. The durability of church is high quality.. It can stand for many earthquakes that it might encounter…

To those who inquire about weddings:
Are you dumb? The Society has stated that this website is not maintained by the parish office. Filipinos can be proud about its churches but some of you can’t be proud about your intelligence.
Contribute to the cause of the Society.
