Activities Report 2007

2007 HIGHLIGHTS

The Board of Trustees and Gurus (Advisory Council) of the HCS conducted monthly board meetings during the year.

HCS has been one of the prime lobbyists of the Heritage Bill filed by Sen. Edgardo Angara. Trustees, led by HCS President Gemma Cruz Araneta, gurus and advocates showed their support by attending public hearings and technical working group meetings. We enjoin members to also support it when it is filed in the House of Representatives. The proposed Heritage Bill is one of the most powerful instruments that we can hope to have.

Teachers’ Camp, the final project of the “Heritage Schoolhouses Restoration Program” between HCS and DepEd, is now in the construction phase, with HCS Trustee Arch. Melvin G. Patawaran and Arch. Cesar Andrew Alaban supervising. HCS’s participation in its restoration is the documentation of the whole camp and proposal of a Master Plan, which have been submitted completely in the early part of the year.

A meeting of the youth members was held in May at the Secretariat, presided by HSC Trustee/Youth Adviser Ivan Henares. With the presence of Arch. Manolo Noche and Dr. Butch Zialcita, a lively discussion ensued about past, present and future activities among the different school chapters.

The Annual General Assembly was held last June 30 at the Gota de Leche, Sampaloc, Manila. After the President’s and Treasurer’s Reports, updates were given on the Teachers’ Camp restoration and upcoming seminar entitled, “Phil. Towns & Cities” Series 2. Ivan Henares solicited help in collecting photos for the 2008 HCS Calendar Collection, “Adaptive Reuse.” Mr. Henares also reported on the youth’s educational visit to House of Precast and Far Eastern University. Arch. Augusto Villalon was kind enough to give a tour of the venue. As an added treat, attendees were invited to visit Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Camba, an ancestral house in Manila.

As a response to the interest generated by the first seminar in 2006, the 2nd Seminar on “Philippine Towns & Cities: Reflections of the Past, Lessons for the Future” was held successfully last 09 November in Iloilo City. Some 300 participants, including a Provincial Governor and several Mayors, attended the seminar. Seven (7) city case studies were presented, and a Mayors’ Forum highlighted the event. Discussed were lessons and challenges of institutionalizing heritage conservation as a tool for urban development and management. Organizers: HCS, Urban Partnerships

Foundation (UPF), Phil. Institute of Environmental Planners (PIEP), Iloilo City Government and DOT Regional Office for Western Visayas. Sponsors: Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation (SPCC) administered by Instituto Cervantes, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center.

HCS Trustees, Gurus and members were invited to speak/lecture about different aspects of heritage conservation, architecture, adaptive reuse, and schoolhouses restoration program in various conferences and conventions here and abroad. They were also requested to join discussions with World Bank, local government agencies and private institutions. Some write regular articles in national newspapers and magazines to awaken public interest in architectural treasures, heritage sites and settings and the challenges we all have to face to conserve them. HCS was represented by Ivan Henares in the Cagayan Youth Congress held last September. He lectured on the subject, “Heritage Stewardship.”

HCS members and advocates were interviewed in several television shows, sharing their knowledge and expertise in history, heritage and ancestral homes.

HCS Trustees (RLMata, MGPatawaran and IAHenares), Gurus (AFVillalon and DQGalicia) and members, attended the annual CIAV (Comité international d’architecture vernaculaire) conference of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) from 02-08 December. There were experts from Europe, North America, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Japan, as well as from various regions of the Philippines. The exchange of ideas was extremely rewarding for everyone, foreigner and Filipino alike, and especially Ifugao. Thank you, Arch. Villalon, for enabling the significant presence of HCS at the event.

HCS Gurus (Bambi Harper and Dom Galicia) and members (Nening Manahan, Jeffrey Yap and Lawrence Chan) met with the staff of Mayor Alfredo Lim last 12 December on the alleged demolition of Luneta Hotel.

HCS documented the following heritage structures: Nuestra Señora de la Soledad de Camba chapel in Tondo, Manila and the ancestral house of Amb. Narcisa Escaler in Quezon City.

Restoration projects in the shortlist are the Army Navy Club (now Museo ng Maynila) and the Dominican Hill in Baguio City.

Howcome the name of Mita Rufino does not appear on any of the above? She CLAIMS that she was involved in the activities together with her in-house technical supplier. Liar.
